Louis K. Ligget persuaded 40 independent drug stores to come together to invest in a retailer’s cooperative called United Drug Store, which used the name Rexall to sell their products back in 1903. After World War 1 they started a franchise arrangement where independently owned retail stores started using Rexall’s name and selling Rexall products.
Rexall got incredible growth and exposure by sponsoring two very classical American Radio Programs. Rexall also sponsors many other programs. Rexall also had The Rexall Train in 1936 to promote the Rexall Drug store. Rexall got so successful that it had 11,158 stores in the U.S. in the year 1958, which made it the most significant U.S. drug store franchise.
